The Condor Report: July 23rd–July 29th

Michael “The Condor” Saunders stats for the week of July 23rd through July 29th:

Doubles/Triples: 1/0

Home Runs: 1

What Went Wrong? Following up a seven strikeout week with a nine strikeout week would be great if Saunders were a pitcher–but he’s not. Three of those punchouts came in a day game–a topic we will delve into further at a later date–against the Royals.

What Went Right? The Condor tattooed a homer off former Mariners pitcher Freddy Garcia and then made a sensational leaping grab later in the game. Take that Yankees!

What Went Wrong? Saunders got a little “K” happy, striking out seven times in the week. He’s on pace for 134 punch outs and that will need to change in order for his average to climb above .250-.260.

What Went Right? The Condor had a productive week including this monster homer to dead-center in Kansas City and a two-run single against Tampa Bay that proved to be the difference in the Mariners 2-1 win. Notice anything about those two highlights? Saunders didn’t pull either of those pitches, and his ability to go to centerfield and the opposite way is a big reason for his breakout season.

What Went Wrong? Saunders was charged with his third error of the year on a ball that took a tough hop on the normally reliable grass of Safeco Field.

What Went Right? After a long stretch where he went without drawing many free passes, Saunders picked up three walks in five games last week, helping wrap up a successful first half that saw the Condor post a .743 OPS to go along with 20 doubles, eight home runs, and 13 stolen bases. It’s safe to say that Saunders has exceeded any expectations that fans had for him coming into the season, and he’s provided one of the few bright spots in another lost year for the Mariners. Here’s hoping he can continue to prove doubters wrong in the second half.

What Went Wrong? Saunders got off to a 1 for 13 start and then missed the next three games with the flu. He’s not the only one that feels like throwing up after last week.

What Went Right? Well, it doesn’t sound like he got anyone else sick…
